This idea is bolstered by research on change and other authors who suggest top down changes do not take hold. For those who are seriously involved with education of Engineering at college/university level, a must to read!
Great background on the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering - a very small and highly competitive engineering school in Needham, MA.
The authors suggest that the only way to improve college level learning...is to start a revolution at the grassroots involving faculty and students. This idea is bolstered by research on change and other authors who suggest top down changes do not take hold. Colleges have no reason to change their structure or focus as long as athletics and rankings keep bringing in resources. This is a very good read but it is a bit disappointing to realize change is not around the corner and educators will have to play gorilla warfare to make small inroads in mainstream colleges that do not see teaching/learning with the same priority as research.
In this book, Goldberg and Somerville tells an emotional story of a group of educators challenging the established culture of engineering education. The timely vision of the "whole new engineer" described in this book resonate with me deeply as an engineer, an educator, and a human being. It is my hope and my belief that this book really does signal the coming of a revolution that will not only transform engineering and education, but also technology and society as we know it.
It is a five-star recommendation for anyone interested in technology, education, innovation, and change.
Excellent insight into how far behind the times we are in preparing our youth for today's world. So nice to know a few colleges are trying to adapt.
An interesting read for sure but presented as more of a story rather than effective advice. Somewhat self-aggrandizing rather than being a useful learning tool.
I have personally seen the "Olin Effect" and am astonished how undergraduate engineering students, who have experienced the education methods described in this book, really get what it is to be an engineer and are able be acquire knowledge well beyond their training to accomplish tasks. I would recommend this book for any educator and any parent who has a high school student looking to enroll in an engineering college.
